quintessentially british

The Duke-NUS corp comms department, comprising C, LM, P and S, took my direct boss G and I out for a thank you lunch on Thursday (22 November). We went to The Queen & Mangosteen in VivoCity. This was the first time I’d ever been to a quintessentially British gourmet pub. And as for the rather quirky name: mangosteen was reputedly Queen Victoria’s favourite fruit, and she allegedly offered a reward to anyone who could bring it to her!

We shared a starter: orange-infused duck rillette with bread.

This was the first time I’d ever tried rilette. Although it didn’t taste of oranges at all, I found it savoury and moreish and really enjoyed it with the bread.

LM had tandoori chicken with pappadums and naan. She said it didn’t really taste Indian. :P

G had lamb shank stew with mashed potatoes.

C had grilled chicken leg with roasted potatoes and salad.

S, P and I all ordered the same thing – fish and chips, a quintessentially British dish!

The fish and chips were quite good. Both items were crispy on the outside, and soft (the fish) or fluffy (the chips) on the inside. Then again I think it is hard to go wrong with fish and chips, as long as the ingredients are fresh, and the food reaches the table freshly fried and piping hot.

This version came with curry tartar sauce, which was an interesting touch, but they should have given more of it. Actually…… they should have given more of the fish as well. :P

Not everyone wanted dessert, so we ordered just one: Kate & William’s Royal Wedding Dessert, which was a chef’s recommendation. The menu said that it was made of fresh wild berries with vanilla sauce, Grand Marnier and whipped cream.

It was a very pretty dessert, although it didn’t seem ! The whipped cream on top was delicious enough. But when we digged deeper, we realized the bottom tasted really strange. It had such a strong medicinal taste that we were all forced to abandon it after a few scoops. :S Eek. Do not order!

I’d love to return and try their other food, and perhaps their drinks as well!
