uniquely singapore english

After I’d typed the term void deck in my previous entry, I suddenly thought of my English in Southeast Asia lecturer, Prof Anne Pakir.

During one seminar, she told us that once she was at this academic gathering overseas. She asked, ‘What do you think void deck means?’ Someone replied, ‘Going to the deck of a boat and throwing up!’

Then she asked Jill, an exchange student from the UK in our class, ‘What do you think killer litter is?’ And Jill answered, ‘What’s left after a murder?’
