kolo mee

My company held a Members’ Appreciation Nite at Golden Village cinema in Marina Square on Thursday, where we screened The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to members who had previously purchased tickets at $10 a pair. (In fact, the movie premiered in Singapore that evening.) My colleagues were also given tickets, so I took two and asked Zhiqi along. That evening, all the staff attending the event left work early so that they could get to the venue on time. I was early but Zhiqi would only be able to make it on time, so I decided to window shop around Marina Square, and eventually ended up having dinner with my editorial board member Dr MC, and his friends Dr YL and Dr AW (who is a research director at the Office of the Deputy President (Research & Technology), National University of Singapore).

Somehow, we ended up dining at Jia Xiang, a rustic little eatery that specializes in kolo mee. I ordered a bowl of their classic kolo mee ($6.40). The noodles were a little hard though, and the gravy didn’t really help. It should’ve been cooked for a minute more or so. The char siew, minced pork and veggies were passable, but they did give me quite a lot of crispy lard bits after I had requested for it. The noodles also came with a bowl of dumplings in soup. Overall, the noodles were nothing to shout about, but quite value for money, given the portion size.
